Write what you don't know.
You are always told to write what you know, but when your goal is finding your voice, you must be brave enough to venture into the unknown.
I have said it many times before, and I will say it again. To develop your voice you have to write what you don't know.
It's contrary to what any conventional writing course will teach you. They always emphasize to write what you know in order to make it deeper and more personal.
If your goal was to write to publish, I would agree, but it's not. You write to understand, and then maybe at the other side of that understanding you can turn it into to something publishable.
You don't know in advance, and you don't care. If it happens, great. If not, also great. You are neutral towards your writing being publishable or not. It doesn't matter.
Awakening of the voice
What matters is that you find and develop your voice. That you wake it up and start tapping into it. That's your only goal in Five Element Writing.
You are here to harness its awesome power and turn it into a driver for the life you live. The difference you want to make.
It takes a different kind of inner connection to do that than what can be achieved by writing what you already know. What you want is to venture into the unknown and see what happens when you apply yourself there. That's what awakens the voice!
Be brave enough to write what you don't know. You will be surprised how much you actually know once you get started. It's all there within. Dormant. Quiet. Waiting to get out.
An exercise
Therefore, pick any subject you know nothing of, set the timer to ten minutes, and start writing. Whatever comes belongs on the page. There are no limits. It doesn't have to be correct, realistic or anything like that. You can make it all up if you want to.
The only thing that matters is that you keep on writing for those ten minutes. Anything goes, as long as you keep on writing. Anything.
At the end of the exercise, you will experience the most interesting meeting of your voice. It sneaks in under the radar and puts its unique mark on everything you put on the paper.
It's there between the lines. Invisible by nature; yet visible for anyone willing to see it. It's who you are. It's all that matters. Go with it.
