Words of movement.

Describing movement is a craft in its own right, and it's not as easy as you might think. But good writing depends on it.

Words of movement.

During the writing of my recent novel I was confronted with the challenge of describing a fight scene. It took me by surprise how difficult it was, and it's not because I don't know fighting.

Having spent more than 30 years in martial art in five different systems, and having had three martial art schools, I know my fighting techniques and tactical movements. I'm used to putting words on movement, and I thought that describing a couple of realistic fight scenes would be a breeze.

What I found out is that there is a huge difference in describing a movement to be realistically correct, and to make it exciting. I ended up with a great fight scene from a fight-technical point of view, but it was boring. Only fans of martial art would find it interesting. I had to find another way.
